Getting Started in Trench Decay
Enlist, learn the Commissar tutorial, redeem codes, and survive your first squad deployment.
TRENCH: DECAY is a WW1 squad PvE FPS on Roblox by studio rook., built as a game-jam winner now expanded into early-access beta. You and up to three allies push through trench lines, complete objectives, survive poison gas, and extract before the position collapses. Every victory nudges a Live War Map shared across all servers — your first hours matter even if you are still learning the ropes.
This guide covers account setup through your first successful deployment. For deeper mechanics, follow the links to Controls, How to Extract, and Survive Gas once you can move and shoot without checking the keyboard.
Before you deploy
Launch the experience
Open TRENCH: DECAY on Roblox on the account you plan to keep. Progress saves during beta unless studio rook. announces a wipe — there is no benefit to swapping alts mid-grind.
Join studio rook. and redeem codes
Most promo codes require membership in the studio rook. Roblox group on the same account. Join the group, favorite the game if Supply Codes stays locked, then redeem every working string on the Codes Hub via the in-game Supply Codes button on the right side of the HUD.
Large milestone codes like 1MVISITS and 1KCCUREWARD can grant hundreds of medals plus multiple Enlisted crates — see Code Rewards for what to open first. If redemption fails, follow How to Redeem Codes before blaming expiration.
Check Preferences for controls
Default bindings are documented in the Controls guide, but the in-game Preferences menu is the source of truth after patches:
- Shift — sprint
- C — crouch / prone
- X — stand up from prone
- Tab — inventory
- Q / E — lean
- T — kick
- LMB / RMB — light / heavy melee
- B — block
- G — interact
Spend five minutes in the hub practicing crouch, lean, and block before queueing — trench fights punish flat-footed movement.
The Commissar tutorial
New players meet the Commissar, an in-world guide who walks through movement, shooting, and objective markers. Do not skip dialogue — beta UI assumes you know how to interact (G) with supply points and extraction beacons.
Tutorial beats typically cover:
- Movement in mud and trenches — sprint drains stamina; crouch reduces profile for headglitch peeks.
- Weapon handling — ammunition is limited; the game wants you comfortable swapping to melee when magazines run dry.
- Objective icons — follow squad waypoints; PvE enemies spawn in waves tied to progress triggers.
- First gas warning — even the tutorial teases chemical attacks; note where mask prompts appear.
If you disconnect mid-tutorial, rejoin the same mode — progress usually resumes at the last checkpoint.
Your first squad deployment
Matchmaking and roles
Queue into public squads or party with friends. Without voice, use quick callouts for gas, ammo, and extraction timing. Four players is ideal; two-player squads can win but need tighter extraction discipline.
Rough informal roles:
- Point man — clears corners with lean peeks, calls enemy audio.
- Support — watches flanks, tosses utility if available, monitors gas lanes.
- Anchor — holds rear choke with block and melee when ammo is low.
- Flex — loots interactables (G) and carries objective items.
Roles are not enforced by the game — agree verbally or suffer the usual public-queue chaos.
Early-run priorities
- Stick together — split squads die to flanking PvE patrols and gas pockets.
- Loot on the move — interact with ammo crates and medical supplies; Tab inventory often.
- Complete marked objectives in order — skipping steps can stall extraction timers.
- Watch the sky and audio for gas — if unsure, read Survive Gas before your second run.
- Extract as a unit — partial exfil wastes Live War Map progress.
Economy after your first exfil
Successful runs award XP, medals through missions, and sometimes field loot. Combine that with code crates to upgrade weapons before cosmetic spins. Open Firearms and Melee crates first if you still carry starter kit — details on the Code Rewards page.
Common first-hour mistakes
- Redeeming codes before joining studio rook. — fix group membership first.
- Sprinting everywhere — stamina matters in mud; save sprint for crossing open ground between trench segments.
- Ignoring prone — crouch and prone stabilize aim and shrink your silhouette in headglitch fights.
- Solo rushing extraction — triggers fail states when teammates are still in combat.
- Forgetting block (B) — melee elites punish players who only hold shoot.
What to learn next
After one or two extractions:
- Controls — master lean clears, kick, and inventory speed.
- How to Extract — objective chains, holdout waves, loot triage.
- Live War Map — why server-wide progress should shape when you push aggressively.
- Codes Hub — re-check after patches for new milestone strings.
TRENCH: DECAY updates frequently — expect occasional server restarts. Progress saves between sessions, so each learning run builds permanent account value during beta.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is Trench Decay free on Roblox?
Yes. The core experience is free to play. Medals and crates come from gameplay, daily missions, spins, and promo codes — not a mandatory Robux purchase.
Who is the Commissar in Trench Decay?
The Commissar is the in-game tutorial guide who teaches movement, combat, and objectives. New players should complete this introduction before public squads.
Should I redeem codes before my first match?
Yes — join studio rook., redeem all working codes from the Codes Hub, and open Firearms or Melee crates so your first deployment is not with default gear only.
Can I play Trench Decay alone?
You can queue solo into public squads, but the game is tuned for online co-op. Extraction and gas events assume teammates watch flanks.
Will beta progress be wiped?
studio rook. states progress saves during beta unless they announce a wipe. Treat unlocks as persistent, but follow official posts if a reset is coming.
What is the Live War Map?
A shared front line updated by player victories across all servers. Successful extractions push allied territory — see the Live War Map guide for details.
